Honnavar, where the Sharavathi meets the sea

Honnavar sits on National Highway 66 in Uttara Kannada, right where the Sharavathi River widens into a backwater estuary before joining the Arabian Sea. It's a working port town rather than a resort strip, which is exactly why its backwaters, river islands and beach coves stay uncrowded — most travellers drive straight through on their way between Gokarna and Murudeshwar without stopping.

When to go

Best Time to Visit Honnavar

October to February is ideal — calm backwaters for boating, a full-flow Apsarakonda waterfall right after monsoon, and comfortable daytime temperatures.

March–May is hot; the waterfall thins out but is still worth seeing. June–September is monsoon, when the Sharavathi runs high and dramatic but most boat rides pause for safety.

How to Reach Honnavar

By road: Honnavar sits directly on NH66, roughly 55 km south of Gokarna and 45 km north of Murudeshwar — an easy stop on a coastal Karnataka drive.

By rail/air: Honnavar railway station is on the Konkan Railway line; the nearest airports are Hubli (~130 km) and Goa/Dabolim (~165 km).
