Unlike the open-sea boat rides common elsewhere on the coast, Honnavar's boating happens in calm, sheltered estuary waters — making it comfortable for families, first-timers, and anyone prone to seasickness.
The signature Honnavar boating experience — a 2-hour ride on a traditional wooden boat through mangrove channels as the sky turns gold. Departs from Honnavar jetty daily at 4:30 PM. Expect egrets, kingfishers, brahminy kites, and the occasional pod of river otters.
A more active way to explore the same estuary — solo or tandem kayaks let you paddle into narrow mangrove channels too shallow for boats. No experience needed; guides brief you on basic strokes before you set off.
For a more authentic, unscripted experience, local fishermen occasionally take visitors out on traditional fishing boats early in the morning — a good option if you want to see the estuary at sunrise rather than sunset, and see how the local fishing community actually uses these waters.
At low tide, the Sharavathi estuary reveals small sandbanks and islets that boats can pull up to — a favourite stop on longer cruises for photos and a quiet break away from the mainland.
