View Honnavar ExperiencesHonnavar (also spelled Honnavara) is a small, charming coastal town in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, sitting at the confluence of the Sharavathi river and the Arabian Sea. Largely unknown to mainstream tourism, it is one of the most rewarding off-beat destinations on the Karnataka coast — offering pristine beaches, extraordinary backwater ecosystems, and proximity to some of the region's most important pilgrimage sites.
The defining experience of Honnavar is the Sharavathi River sunset cruise — a 2-hour boat journey through mangrove channels as the golden light fades over the water, with egrets and kingfishers for company. Tripskar operates this cruise daily, departing from the Honnavar jetty at 4:30 PM.
Beyond the river, Honnavar rewards exploration: Kasarkod Beach and Nirvana Beach to the south are among the cleanest and least-crowded stretches on the Karnataka coast, accessible by road or by backwater boat. To the north, the small town of Kumta offers similar quiet coastal charm.
The Sharavathi estuary is the jewel of Honnavar. The river fans out into a maze of channels flanked by dense mangroves before meeting the sea. A sunset cruise here — on a traditional wooden boat — is one of the finest experiences on the Karnataka coast. Located 5 km south of Honnavar town, Kasarkod is a long, wide, largely empty beach backed by casuarina trees. Unlike the more touristy beaches of Gokarna, Kasarkod is a local secret — calm waters, no hawkers, and spectacular sunsets. Best visited October to March.
Apsarakonda ("pond of the apsaras") is a small but lovely waterfall that plunges onto a crescent of beach — one of the few places in India where a waterfall meets the sea directly. Accessible via a forest path, best visited during or just after monsoon (August–September) when flow is highest. Entry through Karnataka Forest Department.
One of Karnataka's most important Ganapati shrines, the Idagunji temple attracts lakhs of pilgrims each year. Located 30 km from Honnavar on NH-66, it can be included in any Honnavar itinerary. Darshan timings: 6:00 AM–1:00 PM and 5:00 PM–9:00 PM. The shrine is especially busy during Ganesh Chaturthi.
For a more active take on the backwaters, kayak through the narrow mangrove channels of the Sharavathi estuary.
