Kollur sits inland from Murudeshwar at the foot of the Western Ghats, and the Mookambika Temple here is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites on this stretch of Karnataka — dedicated to Goddess Mookambika, a combined form of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati.
A Shakti Peetha at the Edge of the Ghats
The temple is believed to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya, and its setting is part of the draw — the Souparnika River runs alongside the town, and the temple complex backs onto dense Western Ghats forest. It's one of a small number of temples in India where the deity is worshipped as a combined form of the three principal goddesses of Hindu tradition, which is part of why it draws pilgrims from across South India, not only Karnataka.
